Buying Guide for Desks

Shopping Guides

Home office desks have become the must-have item for homes in 2020. Not everyone has the luxury of a dedicated home office space, so finding a way to accommodate a desk into an already full home, can become a challenge.

Luckily there are increasing options for you. Read our buying guide for desks to get some tips and suggestions of a few things you will need to bear in mind, in order to make the right decision and choose the right desk for you.  Here are a few of the main factors to keep in mind.

Your needs

As a result of the Pandemic, more people now work from home, all or the time, or some of the time. To work comfortably and also to be productive at home it’s important to make sure your work space is spacious and stress free. To make sure this is the case consider choosing a larger desk with plenty of storage space.

However, if you don’t have enough space for a large desk choose a space saving desk with storage, or use your corners to maximise your space.

Most people won’t have the luxury of a separate office space, but there are other ways of making sure your office space is kept private and quiet such as using room dividers to make it separate from the rest of the space.

It you have a dedicated home office, you have many options for the location of your desk. Desks can be situated against a wall, facing a window, or set with your back to the window facing the door (power positioning). But if you are trying to fit a desk into your living space you need to look for the best position, particularly if you are not the only person working or in the home during the day. If you work late, or like to start early, perhaps the bedroom would not be the best place to set up your desk. Other places to consider is a corner of the living room, hall or entryway, or even a space under the stairs (if you have them). Look for a place where you will not be in the way. Remember it is not just a desk to accommodate, you also need to fit a chair and potentially storage space.

Home office desks come in a large variety of shapes and sizes. The uniform rectangle shape may not be the best fit for all room sizes and shapes. An L-shaped or corner desk may work best if you are limited with space.  Look for compact versions, which are smaller in scale, to maximize your space.

Do you need a desk with storage? Do you want to keep a tidy work surface? Do you need storage for files or documents. Storage desks come with drawers, shelves, and some with cupboards, to store away paperwork, stationary etc.

Be mindful of what you will put on your desk. If you have a desktop computer, consider purchasing a space saving desk with an inbuilt keyboard tray as this will free up the surface space.

Not considering storage at the outset, may mean having to add a storage cabinet underneath your desk, which will make the space look more cluttered, than a desk with inbuilt storage.

Desks come in a large variety of materials. The material used or the finish of the desk, can make a huge impact on your space. Some materials such as dark woods can make your space seem smaller than it is, whereas other materials which reflect light, such as glass, gloss, chrome, can make the space look lighter and brighter, and help enhance your space.

Matching the style of your desk to your room, can help a desk seamlessly blend into a room. Look for a desk which complements the existing furniture which you have in the room. Choose a desk which matches, or accents, your interior style.

Desks come in a variety of price points. Just because you have a small space, doesn’t mean you have to buy a cheap desk. But if budget is an issue, there are many options which you can also choose from. When setting a budget for a desk, factor in cost of storage which  you might additionally have to buy. It may end up cheaper buying a storage desk after all.
